Nursing Scholarships

Because the demand for nurses is expected to increase in the foreseeable future, there are many scholarships available to people who would like to go to nursing school. If you really want to become a nurse but don't have the money to pay for school, don't be discouraged. Instead, talk with different nursing schools and conduct online searches to find scholarships that can help make school more affordable.

  • Need-based Scholarships
One of the most common types of scholarships is the need-based scholarship. In this kind of scholarship, you'll need to prove that you need the funds to pay for nursing school. Usually, you can find this kind of scholarship through the nursing school or through a state agency. Most states have need-based scholarships for nurses. There are some schools that provide scholarships for students that are underrepresented at that school. For example, some schools do not have enough Latino or African American students, so to attract them, they offer scholarships. To get a need-based scholarship, you'll need to fill out an application and provide proof of your income (or your parents income) by submitting tax returns or other requested financial information.
  • Merit-based Scholarships
Another common type of scholarship is one based on merit of the applicant. Most nursing schools will know what merit-based scholarships are available; they are typically offered by a specific organization, company, or school. For example, a retired pediatric nurse may have started a scholarship for nursing students who wish to specialize in pediatric nursing. To obtain this kind of scholarship, you'll need to fill out an application as well as write an essay about why you would like to become a nurse. Depending on the scholarship, you also may have to meet with, and be interviewed by, the committee that grants the scholarships. Most scholarships of this kind are looking for students who have a solid GPA and have been involved in their community, volunteering and performing community service.
  • Military Scholarships
The last common type of scholarship is a military scholarship. With this kind of scholarship, students will need to join a branch of the military and serve a specific term of duty, either after graduation or before graduation. All four branches of the military offer some kind of scholarship, including the reserves and the ROTC. This option can be a good choice for the right student, especially when he or she also can receive on-the-job training while serving his or her term.
  • Less common Scholarships
While the above are the most common Nursing Scholarships scholarships available, don't forget to research and apply for less common scholarships. There are countless smaller scholarships that, usually, have fewer students competing for them. There also may be scholarships that look for a very specific type of recipient, such as a particular nationality, age, sex, or other demographic that is not as common in nursing.
